William Shakespeare’s 1616 will offers surprising lessons that remain relevant to estate and business succession planning today. After the death of his only son, he restructured his estate and business succession plans to protect his wife, daughters, and future descendants. Last-minute revisions to his will also suggest he adapted his plan in response to changing family circumstances.
The presentation also explores succession themes in King Lear, where poor leadership and emotional decision-making lead to disastrous business and family outcomes. Together, Shakespeare’s will and writings highlight the importance of flexible planning, thoughtful succession, and adapting to life’s unexpected changes.
Attendees will gain a fresh perspective on timeless estate and succession planning challenges by examining how Shakespeare adjusted his plans after significant family changes. The session demonstrates the value of customizing strategies, protecting family legacies, and using evolving financial and legal structures to address changing circumstances.
About the Speaker: Leslie provides legal advice on business and estate planning and is a fiduciary consultant. Licensed in 1987, she started spent 8 years in business litigation, worked for three regional and national financial institutions including 10 years as a Chief Fiduciary Officer, and returned to private practice in 2021.
She earned her JD from the UH Law Center and taught there as an Adjunct Professor for 12 years. She is an ACTEC Fellow; a past Chair of the Houston Bar Association Probate Trust and Estate Section; a past President of both of Houston’s NAEPC Chapters – Houston Estate and Financial Forum and the Houston Business and Estate Planning Council; a past Chair of the Texas Bankers Association Wealth Management & Trust Advisory Board; and serves on TBA’s Education and Intergovernmental Relations Committees.
Passionate about history and live theater, she is a devoted member of several book clubs. Leslie has been writing and presenting continuing education materials for lawyers, bankers, CPAs, and CFPs in Texas and around the country since 1988. A detailed list of more than 150 of those is available on request. Her ‘grandmother name’ is Gigi.
