Title: I (Don’t) Guarantee It: Potential Problems with the Use of Personal Guarantees to Back Loans to Family Trusts

About Our Presenter: Professor Eric Reis is an Assistant Professor of Law, teaching Wills, Trusts, and Estates, Income Tax, Taxation of Business Entities, Family Law, and other courses. Professor Reis graduated with honors from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree, and graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, where he received the Order of the Coif and was an Associate Editor of the Texas Law Review and Chair of the Legal Research Board. 

Following law school, Professor Reis joined the tax section of Thompson & Knight (now Holland & Knight), where he represented very high net worth individuals in their tax planning, estate planning, premarital planning, and restructuring and succession of their businesses. He is a past chair of the Real Estate, Probate & Trust Law section of the State Bar of Texas, where he has helped propose, draft, and vet legislation relating to estates, trusts, and guardianships.

He is also a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and is Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in both Tax Law and Estate Planning & Probate Law. He has previously taught as an adjunct professor at the SMU Dedman School of Law and the Texas A&M University School of Law. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, where he was honored as the Dallas Trusts and Estates Lawyer of the Year for 2018, and is also listed in Texas Super Lawyers and D Magazine’s Best Lawyers in Dallas.
